چکیده

The radiation (reaction, Robin) boundary condition for the diffusion equation is widely used in chemical and biological applications to express reactive boundaries. The underlying trajectories of the diffusing particles are believed to be partially absorbed and partially reflected at the reactive boundary, however, the relation between the reaction constant in the Robin boundary condition and the reflection probability is not well defined. In this paper we define the partially reflected process as a limit of the Markovian jump process generated by the Euler scheme for the underlying Itô dynamics with partial boundary reflection. Trajectories that cross the boundary are terminated with probability P √ ∆t and otherwise are reflected in a normal or oblique direction. We use boundary layer analysis of the corresponding master equation to resolve the non-uniform convergence of the probability density function of the numerical scheme to the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation in a half space, with the Robin constant κ. The boundary layer equation is of the Wiener-Hopf type. We show that the Robin boundary condition is recovered if and only if trajectories are reflected in the co-normal direction σn, where σ is the (possibly anisotropic) constant diffusion matrix and n is the unit normal to the boundary. Otherwise, the density satisfies an oblique derivative boundary condition. The constant κ is related to P by κ = rP √ σn, where r = 1/ √ π and σn = nσn. The reflection law and the relation are new for diffusion in higher-dimensions.

Remarks on q-space MR propagator in partially restricted, axially-symmetric, and isotropic environments.

The problem of reconstruction of an apparent propagator from a series of diffusion-attenuated magnetic resonance (MR) signals is revisited. In nonimaging acquisitions, the inverse Fourier transform of the MR signal attenuation is consistent with the notion of an ensemble average propagator. However, in image acquisitions where one is interested in quantifying a displacement distribution in ever...

2 O ct 2 00 6 Partially Reflected Brownian Motion : A Stochastic Approach to Transport Phenomena ∗

Transport phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and known to be important for various scientific domains. Examples can be found in physics, electrochemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, physiology, etc. To obtain new information about diffusive or Laplacian transport towards a semi-permeable or resistive interface, one can study the random trajectories of diffusing particles modeled, in a first appro...

Reactive boundary conditions for stochastic simulations of reaction-diffusion processes.

Many cellular and subcellular biological processes can be described in terms of diffusing and chemically reacting species (e.g. enzymes). Such reaction-diffusion processes can be mathematically modelled using either deterministic partial-differential equations or stochastic simulation algorithms. The latter provide a more detailed and precise picture, and several stochastic simulation algorithm...

Wave Propagation in Micropolar Thermoelastic Diffusion Medium

The present investigation is concerned with the reflection of plane waves from a free surface of a micropolar thermoelastic diffusion half space in the context of coupled theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The amplitude ratios of various reflected waves are obtained in a closed form. The dependence of these amplitude ratios with an angle of propagation as well as other material parameter are sh...
